BuzzFeed, the often maligned online news and entertainment hub known for its gif and image driven content, has its fixed gaze on international news.
By establishing a world news desk in New York, hiring foreign correspondents and assigning new and radically different beats for reporters, BuzzFeed has seemingly followed the world news coverage precedent.
Not quite. Foreign correspondents are assigned to “thematic beats” rather than traditional geographic beats. Thematic beats are meant to engage worldwide communities in a way no other publication has tried before.
For example, the LGBT beat is covered by BuzzFeed foreign correspondent Lester Fedder.
Up until now I never saw the validity of BuzzFeed as a news source. I find these changes to traditional beat reporting to be revitalizing to an industry in need of dramatic shift. Hopefully other publications will take a hint from BuzzFeed’s fresh perspective.
